Herbalism, the use of plant parts for healing, dates back thousands
of years to ancient China, where herbs were used for their medicinal value to remedy a wide range of diseases and disorders.
Today, herbalism consists of using natural substances including the roots, bark, shoots, leaves, seeds and fruits of plants
as well as minerals and some animal parts to provide conditions that allow the body to heal itself. Herbs are directed
toward balancing energy, thereby also relieving symptoms.
There are more than 500 different herbs used in Chinese Herbal Medicine, and more than 300 formulas
recommended in varying proportions for different conditions. An herbal treatment process begins with an Oriental evaluation
of the patient to diagnose imbalances, followed by an individualized prescription of herbs, which is reassessed and readjusted
at regular intervals. Today, herbs are dispensed as teas, the traditional method, or in the form of powders, pills or
capsules. Each formula is designed to treat imbalances in the body.
A formula can affect many results such as help to nourish areas of deficiency and disperse areas of exceess, which will depend
on the individual's symptoms. When prescribed by a qualified herbalist, they are safe and effective without side
effects.
Herbal therapy is used both long-term for preventive health care and short-term for healing.
It has proven especially effective in treating acute conditions such as headaches, pneumonia, flu and the common cold, and
for more chronic conditions like diabetes, asthma, high blood pressure, arthritis, gastrointestinal problems, chronic fatigue
syndrome, menstrual disorders, and metabolic and blood disorders.
